Graduation Requirements

Students must:

  • meet the requirements of the grade 9/10 program
  • successfully complete the English Language Proficiency Assessment or Reassessments or Certified Exemption.

In addition to the above, students must complete one of the following:

  • a) Successfully complete the requirements of the Essential Skills Pathway.
  • b) Achieve 18 of 20 credits including compulsory courses as outlined in the High School Program of Study, 2000; and pass 5 courses at the grade 12 level.

There are 7 compulsory credits:

  • English grade 12 (1 credit)
  • English grade 11 (2 credits)
  • Math grade 11 (1 credit)
  • Modern History grade 11 (1 credit)
  • Science (1 Credit) 
  • Fine Arts/Life Role Development Cluster – see below (1 credit)

Fine Arts/Life Role Development Cluster

  • Theatre Arts 120
  • Family Living 120
  • Outdoor Pursuits 110
  • Health and Phys Ed 120
  • Reading Tutor 120
  • Wellness 110 and others
  • Students may take up to 2 Challenge for Credit courses and 1 Independent Study for graduation purposes.
  • Only 1 locally developed course is eligible for credit for graduation purposes and may not replace a compulsory course.

Participation in Graduation Activities

Participation in all graduation activities such as banquet, prom and graduation exercises are not a guaranteed right.  Graduates must have all grad fees paid, extra-curricular fees paid, and textbooks returned or paid to participate in graduation exercises.  This includes fees owing from any year at TVMHS.

Class of 2026 and beyond

A new Pathway to Graduation is beginning for students entering grade 10 in September 2023. All students expected to graduate in 2024 and 2025, will follow previously outlined graduation requirements which are addressed above. Students expected to graduate in 2026 will follow the newly prescribed Graduation Pathway, also included below. 

General Requirements

Students who are expected to graduate in 2026 and beyond will follow requirements outlined in Policy 316B.  

  • Students must have met learning requirements prescribed in the Grade 9 curriculum. 
  • Students must have a successful rating on the English Language Proficiency Assessment  
  • Students must have completed compulsory credit-hours in Grades 10 through 12 
  • French Immersion students must complete 50% of the Grade 9 curriculum and 40 credit-hours in Grades 10-12 French to receive this credential. 
  • Students must have accumulated 100 credit-hours to apply for graduation. Early graduation is possible. See more information in the course selection handbook on these two topics. 

Students must have developed a documented career-life plan.
